THE NEW HOT 100 A Definitive Guide to the Best Young Surfers in the World

10| 10. Clay Marzo
Birthday:
July 17, 1989
Hometown: Lahaina, Hawaii

Growing up pushing limits in the water with half-brother Cheyne Magnusson, as well as Maui friends Ian Walsh, Ola Eleogram, Dusty Payne, and Hank Gaskell, Clay Marzo is the freakish frontrunner in Maui's emergence as a surfing powerhouse. Out of the group he is the most creative, inventive surfer. “He's got this really radical approach to his surfing, explains Gaskell of his goofy-footed friend. “Clay's free surfing is so good that he's only 17 and they're already making a movie about him, and I guarantee it won't disappoint. Some critics of Marzo have pointed out weaknesses in his backhand, while others contend his forehand is so dominant it merely overshadows it. Also of question his ability to grovel-a prerequisite for anybody bound for the WQS. But as long as his attention stays on point, all the rest is easy to work on, and considering he once posted two perfect 10s in the finals of the 2005 NSSA Nationals, it shouldn't be much of a problem.
